| Access
to E-Journals & Databases |
Access to databases and/or electronic journals is provided to the Technion Community only. Any computer connected to the Technion network may obtain access.
|
One can access the Technion network from any computer physically
located in the Technion's campuses (including the Faculty
of Medicine and the Faculty of Continuing Education in Tel
Aviv), and any off campus computer that is connected to
the Technion network using one of the connections listed
in "Off Campus Access".
|
|
|
Please note: |
|
Connecting
via the Technion VPN
system allows users to continue receiving services from
external internet suppliers, such as Netvision or Bezek International,
and not necessarily via the Technion. Additionally, one can
connect when abroad via a local (abroad) Internet Service
Provider (ISP) . |
All
off campus connections require use of a "smart-dial" card |
Access to Databases on CD-ROM can be obtained from computers located in the Technion campus only

| The
Anna Tulin-Elyachar Information Center |
|
The Central Library's Information Center is actually a computer cluster (farm) designated for the public at large, and includes 50 workstations and 3 laser (black/white and color) printers. |
|
Six of the 50 computers are allocated for specific uses only (access to the catalog and viewing recorded lectures). In these workstations internet access is limited and most applications that are found in the unrestricted stations are not available. |
|
The
Information Center's computers contain protection systems
which main purpose is to ensure a high level of function
and availability to all users. Consequently, every shut-down
or restart of the computer (whether deliberate, the result
of a power outage, or any other reason) will erase
all material that was written or saved on the computer. |
|
Due
to the above, users should back up all
materials frequently on diskettes, on mobile
storage units (disk-on-key), by sending attachments via
e-mail, or transferring FTP files to storage on a remote
server (such as t2). |
|
Work can be sent to print from any computer in the cluster, except those allocated for viewing recorded lectures. |
|
The two computers that are installed in the print room are designated for users' printing jobs only, and are entirely unavailable for any other use whatsoever. |
|
On every computer's desktop in the cluster, there is a support file that details procedures, gives instructions, recommendations and guidance for working in the Central Library Computer Cluster. |
|
| Electronic Reprints |
|
Electronic
reprints are excerpts from books, periodicals and other
publications that are required or recommended reading material
for courses. These materials are protected to comply with
copyright laws, and their access is limited to students
who are registered for a particular course only.
Students may access the reprints via the library catalog, or via the course site, after receiving a username and code from the lecturer.
The amount of pages that can be scanned and converted to a reprint is limited and must be done according to the "fair use" doctrine. Therefore it's crucial to verify that a reprint from a book or any other source protected by copyright does not exceed 15% of the original work.
Reprint files (PDF)
are stored and managed by a local server in the Central
Library. In order to view them, Adobe Acrobat Reader needs to be installed on the user's computer.
Codes and usernames are given only for courses taught during the semester. A list of courses for which a username is required should be sent to the Central Library as early as possible at the beginning of each semester.

| Ariel system |
|
| The Central Library's Computer Services Department supports the Technion's Ariel System, found in the Central Library and some of the faculties. The Ariel specialized program with use of an appropriate scanner, enables the sending and/or receiving of requested excerpts from books, periodicals (articles), and other publications from sources outside the Technion, as well as between the Technion's faculties.
Please note:
Scanned documents are in TIFF or PDF formats. (PDF is possible
only with Ariel version 3.0 or higher)
Technion Faculty Libraries that don't have Ariel can, under
certain conditions, use a program and scanner that enables
PDF format. In this case, the documents are transferred
via e-mail

| Laptops in the Elyachar Central Library |
|
| The Central Library has facilities for connecting to the Technion network (Dormitory network) via laptop computers. Users can connect using either a network cable, or using the wireless network. Network cable connection can be made only from the appropriate workstations (located in Reading Hall "A"). Wireless connection can be made from any seat within the library's reading halls.
Please note:
Printed instructions for connection are available at the
Reference Desk.
Network cables can be borrowed at the Reference desk
